Social Media Statistics for 2013 [Infographic]

We are all fascinated by numbers. Number of followers on Twitter, number of likes on a Facebook page, number of repins on Pinterest, number of comments on a blog post, and so on. The more the merrier.

Discussed earlier in this post here, are the social media facts, figures, and statistics for the year 2012. Then, Digital Insights came up with a nice infographic depicting the social media statistics for 2013.
I compared the statistics for both the years, 2012 and 2013. Few of the notable differences I observed are:

  • In 2012, around 175 million tweets were being sent each day. In 2013, around 400 million tweets were being sent each day.

A History of Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC]

First mail was sent in 1971, and today in 2012 we have got an army of social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter etc. Every social media channel has got a different concept but each one of these revolves around the fact that we, human beings, are a social animal. We like to socialize, make friends, and then make more friends and so on. This fact has given birth to everything on the internet between 1971 to 2012.

We would like to look at, what social media has evolved into. A fantastic infographic from Copyblogger   clears the picture. Let's have a look, but I can't help myself but wonder what lies ahead in the coming years in the world of social media.

So, the focus of today's post is how social media has changed the way we learn and consume data.

In this regard yesterday I found this very interesting post on mindflash titled "Social Media Has Changed Learning: A Few Answers Via Tweet Chat." Bill Cushard, the author of this post, participates in weekly tweet chat called #Irnchat where a group of learning professionals discuss issues and ideas in the workplace learning space. One of the #Irnchat sessions was centred around "Social Media Has Changed Learning". The discussion uncovered two of the very interesting facts which I would like to share.

Is Social Media Ruining Our Minds? [INFOGRAPHIC]

10 years ago, if we would have asked someone what their attention span on social media sites was, the answer would have been 12 minutes. Today the attention span has dropped to just 5 seconds which means that, an individual spends only 5 seconds on a social media site. Of course, this can be contributed to the ever increasing growth of internet. But this can also have serious implications on how our minds get shaped. An infographic created by AssistedLivingToday titled "How Social Media is Ruining our minds" explores how social media is rewiring our brains.
